How to Calculate Foreign Work Experience for Canada Immigration

Fortunately, the formula for calculating work experience isn’t hard. The rules are these, but they boil down to a full-time year of 1,560 hours. 

You must work at least one year, working between 30 and 37.5 hours per week in one job, or a total of 30 hours or 37.5 hours per week in more than one job. This must be in one or more skilled occupations: 

  • Skill Type 0 (Managerial occupations)
  • Skill Type A (Professional occupations)
  • Skill Type B (Technical occupations and skilled trades)

Please note the mandated time period is full-time for 1,560 hours spread over a year. You cannot work excessive hours for half a year to meet the threshold.

It is not enough to have merely worked the year of full-time 1,560 hours. You must be able to prove it with supporting documents and reference letters. It should be written on company letterhead and have your job title or titles in the time you worked for the company.  Finally, it should have the contact information for the manager.

This is all part of your Express Entry Profile as a skilled worker. Part-time work experience can be counted toward this method of entry to become a permanent resident as well. For example, you can work for 15 hours per week for 24 months and accumulate a total of 1,560 working hours which is equivalent to 1 year of full-time work experience. You can work as many part time jobs as you need to meet this requirement.
