As a Canadian permanent resident (PR) applying for citizenship, you might be wondering about the rules for traveling outside Canada. Here’s what you need to know to ensure you remain eligible for Canadian citizenship while traveling and how to handle your PR status.

Be a Canadian PR When Applying for Citizenship

Only Canadian PRs can apply for citizenship. Temporary residents, such as foreign workers and international students, are not eligible for citizenship.

Meet the Residency Requirement

To maintain PR status, you must reside in Canada for at least 730 days over the past five years. This requirement doesn’t need to be continuous, and some time spent outside Canada may count towards it.

Maintain PR Status Until Taking the Oath of Citizenship

To be eligible for citizenship, you must not lose PR status before taking the Oath of Citizenship.

Travel Outside Canada with Your PR Card

Traveling with your PR card makes re-entry to Canada easier. Ensure your PR card is valid before leaving, as expired cards can lead to complications upon return.

Renew Your PR Card Before Expiry

PR cards can only be renewed in Canada. Ensure yours is up-to-date before traveling, as IRCC does not send PR cards to non-Canadian addresses.

Obtain a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) if Needed

If your PR card is expired or lost while abroad, you’ll need a PRTD to re-enter Canada. Apply for a PRTD from outside Canada before your return.

Respond to IRCC Communications Promptly

IRCC communicates primarily with Canadian addresses. Respond promptly to letters or emails, as failure to do so may affect your application.

Attend Appointments and Events

Attend all scheduled appointments, tests, ceremonies, and interviews at IRCC offices across Canada. If you can’t attend, notify the local office promptly.

Ensure Compliance with IRCC Policies

Adhere to all IRCC policies regarding communication, appointments, and documentation to avoid delays or complications in your citizenship application.

Seek Professional Assistance

Navigating the citizenship process can be complex. Consider seeking guidance from an immigration lawyer to ensure compliance with all requirements and deadlines.
