When navigating the immigration system, some provinces of Canada have different requirements (such as the Quebec immigration rules for international students or the Alberta immigration requirements for international students) all of these provinces, across the board, have these mandates for study permits. So while we’re not going to break down the individual requirements of the Manitoba immigration rules for international students, for example, we are going to talk about the requirements that apply to all students.

Here are then unbreakable rules for international students studying in Canada

Immunization Requirements

You have to qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler in accordance with Canadian government laws. If you are under 18, you don’t have to be fully vaccinated, but you do have to be enrolled at an institution with a COVID-19 readiness plan.

You Must Be Enrolled at a DLI

What’s a DLI? It’s a Designated Learning Institution. For younger students, ALL primary and secondary schools are listed as DLIs, but not all post-secondary schools are. Before you can receive your study permit you must ALREADY be accepted in a DLI. To find the official DLI list for Canada Immigration Levels, click here

You Must Prove You Are Financially Stable

In requirements across Canada, from the Vancouver immigration rules for international students to the Alberta immigration rules for international students, all require that you have to prove you can pay for your tuition and fees, your living expenses (including living expenses for any family members who will be coming to Canada with you), and that you will be able to afford return transportation back to your country of origin.

You Must Prove You Have No Criminal Record

You must prove to the Canadian federal government that you have no criminal record. In some cases, you must obtain a police certificate (you will be directed to as needed). You must also obey all Canadian laws while you are in Canada, and breaking the law could be a reason for you to lose your study permit.

You Must Prove You Are In Good Health

You must be in good health, and, if instructed, you must get a medical exam. If you are coming from any of these countries a medical exam is mandatory.

You Must Prove That You Will Be Leaving Canada When Your Study Permit Expires

The only situations in which you can stay in Canada after your study permit expires is if you are a skilled worker with work experience AND have an offer of full-time employment to work in Canada, OR have a post-graduation work permit.
